The FA and the English football team are going through a period of some concern regarding their preparations for the World Cup. As if it was not enough that the team has been blighted by injuries and tarnished by scandals amongst its senior players, those in charge are now having to cope with the fact that they may be under surveillance without their knowledge.

It has been brought to light that conversations between England players and members of coaching staff were listened in on by voice recorders that were planted in the team’s hotel in Hertfordshire before their last friendly game against Egypt. Whilst the details of the tape have been kept secret, the security breach is cause for concern.

The possibility that rivals get their hands on similar tapes is one that doesn’t bear thinking about for the FA as England prepare to mount a successful World Cup campaign. However, it is less a concern about leaked tactics as a concern about further scandal.

The last thing the English Football Association, or indeed anyone involved in English football, wants is for spy equipment to be used to drag up more information that could bring the game into disrepute. Taken out of context, voice recordings such as these could potentially harm the team’s preparation for the world’s biggest football tournament.

Whether you need to record telephone conversations to train your staff or monitor calls to make sure your phone systems are being used appropriately, you need your recording to be undetectable and discreet. You may even need to monitor phone calls as a matter of security within your business, just as a preventative measure to cover your back should anything untoward be discussed on your phone lines.

Investing in a digital telephone recorder call recorder allows you to collect and record audio onto a small SD card. These devices will give you a comprehensive record of times, dates, durations and telephone numbers called. They also record with incredible clarity so that your footage is not rendered useless because of poor quality.

Other devices, like the GSM MobileMaster allow you to listen to your phone lines in real-time.

If you have need of a device that will allow you to record on your mobile phone, then recording leads are the best option. These clever little pieces of spy equipment are designed to record two sides of a telephone conversation with exceptional clarity without being detectable. They feature an earpiece and a jack which fits into a regular recording device, allowing you to monitor calls even when they are not made on your landline.

Surveillance is sometimes an absolute necessity if you want to bolster the security of your home or office, especially when you are not there. If you feel that your property could be a target for thieves, then you probably already have a number of security features to prevent them from breaking and entering. However, if they manage to breach these, then you won’t want them to get away with it.

Hidden cameras are clever bits of surveillance equipment that can help capture the images of trespassers at work. A couple of varieties of hidden cameras are listed below.

3G hidden cameras

Often in the form of wall clocks, digital clocks, DVD players and so on, 3G hidden cameras allow you to make a video call to them and monitor the real time footage the camera is filming on your mobile phone. This is surveillance equipment at its most cutting edge.

Motion detection cameras

You don’t necessarily want your hidden camera to be filming all the time when you are away. This could lead to hours of wasted footage and memory card space. To circumvent this problem, motion detection cameras only film when they detect motion in their line of sight. If you are away then this motion could well indicate trespassers. These are also frequently found in the guise of clocks, but also air conditioning devices and books.

Some of us are afflicted with the constant problem of misplacing and losing the items that we use most regularly. When we lead such hectic lifestyles it is no surprise that we end up putting things down in places we wouldn’t normally look for them. Sometimes we even put them in a ‘safe place’ only to forget the location of it. If tidiness is one of your virtues, you might find yourself in such a hurry to restore a room to neatness that you end up unable to find the items you have previously cleared away.

Unfortunately, the repeat offenders tend to be the items we can’t do without and often need in a hurry. These are likely to include car keys, house keys, mobile phones, bags and briefcases and so on.

Luckily, there are intelligent pieces of spy equipment on the market that can help you recover them quickly. Among the most useful are mini tagging devices. These devices consist of a handheld receiver with an LED display and a little tag which alerts the receiver as to its whereabouts. The receiver guides you with beeps and visual clues and is able to pick up the trail of your tagged item at a range of 400 feet.

With the help of this little piece of kit, you’ll never have to worry about misplacing your items again.

Voice recording can have numerous benefits if you have reason to believe that you are being treated unfairly and want to discover the truth. There are various levels of covertness with which you can approach voice recording, with clever spy equipment that is more or less undetectable.

If you simply want to record certain conversations in which you are a participant, perhaps to cover your back at a later date or to gather proof of something, then you would be best off with a recorder you could hide somewhere about your person. Wrist watch voice recorders, USB stick recorders and pen recorders disguise your surveillance equipment as pretty innocuous objects that won’t draw any undue attention.

If, however, your plan is to record conversations that take place in a room in your absence then you require more subtle methods in order to succeed. One of the best recording devices on the market in this event is a wall socket voice recorder. Wall sockets are probably the most commonplace objects you are likely to find in any building, so no suspicion is likely to fall on them.

Voice recording can help give you a record of all the things that are said at a given time or place, helping you feel more comfortable in your surroundings.

GP practices in Birmingham are going to have to be on their very best behaviour over the next few months as it has been announced that spy equipment is going to be used to keep an eye on their performance.

NHS Heart of Birmingham has come up with the idea of incorporating mystery shopper-style regulation on practices in its area of jurisdiction. They hope that the use of surveillance equipment will spur practices on to provide excellent standards of service for their patients.

Critics have suggested that the scheme is something of cynical move by managers to target practices unfairly, when they should be focussing on other areas.

However, Heart of Birmingham Teaching PCT hold that the scheme is in place to make sure that patients in the Birmingham area are delivered the service they deserve. They deny that the scheme will be used for negative purposes of outing practices that don’t perform well under surveillance equipment.

A spokesperson for the PCT said that:

[The venture] is designed to improve the patient experience at all levels, from initial contact with the surgery, their visit to the surgery and the whole patient pathway. It’s a positive scheme that, if shown to be successful, will be rolled out across the PCT.

Spy equipment including surveillance recording gear and video technology will be used to put the practices under scrutiny.

The United States is probing every possibility in its fight against extremists in the Middle East. As part of its foreign policy the US is now looking to give Pakistan some of its expensive surveillance equipment. The surveillance equipment is intended to help Pakistani officials to crack down on extremism in some of the hotspots in the Middle East.

The North West Frontier Province sits right on the very front line when it comes to fundamentalism and the US has targeted the Elite Force of this area as crucial to the fight against terror.

The donated equipment reportedly includes such hi tech surveillance equipment as global positioning systems, binoculars and night vision binoculars as well as armoured personnel carriers for use in the Pakistani region. The equipment comes from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement’s own stock of surveillance gear.

Surveillance is a major part of the fight against fundamentalism as officials seek to observe activities that could pose a potential threat to national security.

You might even feel inspired by these measures to step up your own home security and certain items of surveillance equipment can help you do so. Night vision binoculars and GPS devices can help you feel a little more secure about the safety of your belongings and their recoverability if they are stolen.

Two Brits could be looking at a lengthy spell in jail in India, after they were arrested over spying claims.

Stephen Hampton and Steve Ayres aroused suspicions when they arrived at the Radisson Hotel in Delhi and requested a room that overlooked the runway of Indira Gandhi airport. Their room was subsequently raided by armed police, who found ‘surveillance equipment’ including an air traffic control scanner, camera, laptop and binoculars.
Hampton and Ayres were then arrested and charged with intercepting communications under India’s Telegraph Act.

However, the pair are protesting their innocence, and claim that they are both avid plane spotters, as opposed to terrorists. They have travelled to many locations all over the world together to indulge in their hobby.

Tony Birch, a colleague of Mr Ayres, confirmed:

“I’ve known Steve for three years. He’s a well-known plane spotter and so is his mate. I’ve negotiated with the company and they have put them on annual leave. We are all supportive of them. This is just a matter of crossed wires and I hope it can be sorted out soon.”

The pair have been bailed and are due back in court tomorrow.

Sometimes, it seems as though barely a day goes by without hearing yet another story of a burglary or theft, so it’s little wonder that many of us are left wondering about the safety of our personal property.

Many of us work long hours, which means that homes are regularly left unattended for a large proportion of the day. Burglars are opportunists, and take advantage of the fact that homes are unoccupied throughout the day and, if you don’t invest in adequate home surveillance and security equipment, you could find that you become one of their latest victims.

It’s a bad sign of the times when surveillance equipment is seen as vital in the home, although it’s the only way of keeping your property safe and your mind at ease.

There are various different types of home surveillance equipment available on the market today, with cameras and video recorders being the most common and the most effective.

So, if you want to safeguard your belongings and rest easy whilst you’re away from home, surveillance equipment is the best way of achieving this.

When you are trying to look after your property, there are certain things that can hinder you in your quest for security.

One of the most obvious hindrances is the night time. In daylight hours you can watch over your property in the relative certainty that you are not missing a beat, but at night it is an entirely different matter. Thieves and trespassers are far more likely to operate at night, using the cover of darkness to carry out their misdeeds.

When you have suspicions about dodgy goings on in your neighbourhood and you want to keep an eye on things, there’s precious little you can see outside of daylight hours without some pretty sophisticated surveillance equipment.

In this scenario, night vision binoculars and monoculars come in extremely handy. These devices allow you to effectively see in the dark to spy on potential thieves creeping about, believing that they can’t be seen. They are designed to be very tough and durable and they will improve your home security and surveillance no end by removing the uncertainty that shrouds the night time activity on your street and on your property.

Force thieves out from the cover of darkness with a night vision monocular.

A school in America has come under fire this week amid accusations that it has been using spy equipment to monitor the behaviour of some of its pupils.

Lower Merion School issued webcams to students for them to use at home. The webcams were apparently intended to assist pupils in their studies, but concerns were raised when the headmistress of the school confronted a student about behaviour he had been engaged in at home. The pupil in question was alarmed that the school were able to monitor what he did in his own house and alerted his parents who took the matter further.

The school has defended itself by claiming that the webcams feature a certain security measure that allows them to be activated remotely so that they can track laptops that have gone missing or have been stolen. They also said that the feature had since been removed.

The school’s claims did little to appease concerned families and students who reacted angrily to the fact that remote access effectively turned the webcams into surveillance equipment, allowing school officials to spy on members of the household without their knowledge. Students have since taken measures to disable the cameras which they fear could catch them undressed or engaged in any form of private activity.

Israel is courting controversy with its latest announcement concerning the country’s foreign policy. Israel’s army has declared that it is in possession of the largest and most impressive unmanned aircraft yet seen. Israel claims that their latest piece of surveillance equipment is capable of spending a total of twenty hours in the air without a pilot. It is also able to climb to much greater heights than other unmanned aircraft and can carry a great deal of cargo.

The surveillance drone’s technological capabilities mean that it is fully able to reach Iran from Israel, something which the Iranians will not have missed.

The drone has undergone a great deal of testing already, but it will not officially begin operations until next year.

The development of the surveillance drone is likely to have been undertaken under the close eye of the United States military who are very close allies with the Israelis. The drone’s ability to reach Iran will be of particular interest to the American as they seek to put further pressure on the Middle Eastern country with regard to its nuclear program.

Iran denies that it has a military nuclear program, but Israel’s new spy equipment is likely to be used to ascertain the truth on the matter.

In a move to cut crime and enhance the safety of the town, Dudley Council have announced that they are getting set to link all of their CCTV together- in a scheme which is set to cost around £86,000.

All of the CCTV across the area will link together in an attempt to create a super system- which will also include traffic cameras.

It is hoped that merging all of the surveillance equipment will help to cut criminal activity in the area, as it will enable more areas to be covered.

The council’s cabinet member for transportation, Councillor Angus Adams, enthused:

“I’m really pleased we have found a way to link up the systems which will bring about numerous benefits. I know it has already been of significant use to officers looking after our gritting operations during the cold weather and highways staff will now be able to keep on top of changing road conditions and incidents thanks to the live feeds they will be able to view.”

Equally optimistic, cabinet member Adrian Turner, added:

“I am sure the link-up will increase public protection and reassurance and should bring efficiencies to police responses to incidents as the new images will also be relayed directly into police operational control rooms.”

The system is set to go live in the very near future.

Merseyside Police have recently come under fire for their use of an ‘eye in the sky’ surveillance drone to find a suspected stolen car. The use of the drone is not the issue- it is the fact that the police used the drone without prior permission that is the problem.

On the 26th January, police used the drone to track down a stolen Renault Clio- which they suspected had been stolen and was being driven by a 16 year and a 20 year old. Although the use of the drone did lead to an arrest, this was seriously overshadowed when it emerged that the police officers in question could face prosecution for breach of airspace.

However, defending the use of the surveillance equipment, Nick Gunatilleke of Merseyside Police, said:

“The force is continually looking to use new technology to help in its fight against crime and these arrests demonstrate the value of having something like the UAV as a resource.”

In the meantime, use of the drones has been suspended, and the Aviation Regulation Enforcement Department are currently investigating the case, with further details expected in the very near future.

Teaching unions have expressed their concern over the increasing use of online surveillance software to monitor the every move of teachers.
The software has been introduced in many schools all over the UK, in an attempt to put a stop to cyber bullying and pupils visiting inappropriate websites.

The online surveillance equipment is extremely complex, and can monitor a wide range of activity, including search engine queries, sites visited and emails sent.

Although there is little doubt that this equipment is effective in monitoring pupils, the union have voiced their concerns on the monitoring of teachers.

Chris Keates, of the NASUWT teachers’ union, explained:

“I think it is more widespread than we realise. There is surveillance of teachers in classrooms for all sorts of things.
“There is the big issue of CCTV in classrooms and two-way mirrors.
“I think laptop surveillance is being used to see how teachers are using their time, checking that they are not logging on to Facebook or looking at the internet for something personal.”
“It’s about professional trust and confidence. Teachers have more restrictions than their pupils these days”.

However, Richard Lawson, Telford and Wrekin Councils ICT Strategy Manager disagreed:

“We have had this for three years or more now and I have heard teachers say it is the best thing we have had.”

With plans to roll out the software in even more schools and colleges across the UK, it looks as though these concerns may fall on deaf ears.

It can be an upsetting and frustrating time when your money or property goes missing, and other than having eyes in the back of your head or staying up all hours, it can feel like there’s no end in sight to the problem. Well fear no more, as you can now point the finger with confidence!

There are many innovative pieces of surveillance equipment and gadgets available on the market today that allow you to put an end to problems.

Digital desk top radios are perfect for practically any environment as they don’t look out of place and look completely innocent. With a motion detection facility, which activates the moment any movement is detected, you’re bound to find the footage that you’re looking for. Add total darkness recording to the equation and there really is nowhere for the culprit to hide.

Footage can be quickly and easily played back on either a television or a computer- making it the simple solution to a difficult problem.

When you receive phone call after phone call, if you’re not the best note taker in the world it can become all too easy to forget important information until it’s too late.

A simple way of keeping on top of all of your phone calls is by investing in telephone recording equipment.

The Digital Telephone Call Recorder is a great piece of surveillance equipment that is of amazing professional quality, but is also ideal for personal home use. The recorder is incredibly simple to operate- all you need to do is connect it to the landline then connect it to the phone socket.

Not only does the recorder have the ability to record calls, it can also log the date, time, call length and phone numbers of incoming and outgoing calls.

Over 340 hours of recordings can be stored, so there really is no excuse for forgetting to attend that important business meeting or remembering your mother in law’s birthday!

As a parent it’s natural to worry about the whereabouts of your child, particularly with terrifying reports of abductions and child abuse constantly on the news.

If your child regularly attends after school activities or plays out with friends, it can be tempting to sit worrying about their whereabouts until they come home. However, there’s now an easy way of achieving peace of mind with the innovative GPS Tracking Watch.

Looking just like a standard watch, this nifty piece of surveillance equipment is designed to track the movements of the wearer and send their location back via GSM and GPS signals. The wearer can be located by simply dialling the number supplied from a mobile phone, which is then sent to the handset as a WAP link- that can be viewed by any mobile phone that has mobile internet activated.

Once opened, the WAP link displays an up to date street map of the wearer’s exact location.

One of the fantastic things about the GPS Tracking Watch is that it’s very simple to set up, and you don’t even need access to a computer as it works solely through the use of a mobile phone.

The GPS Tracking Watch lets your child keep on top of their time keeping and allows you to keep on top of your nerves.

Although thieves are drawn to properties that look as though they might hold an Aladdins cave of expensive items, they’re not particularly fussy on breaking into and stealing from everyday homes.

There are many ways in which you can protect your home, one of which is the good old fashioned floodlight. Bright floodlights tend to send thieves on their way quite swiftly, and now there is an innovative take on the traditional light that has even more security benefits.

The security light with motion detection recording can be fixed to practically any spot outside your home. When any movement is detected, a bright light is activated and any suspicious activity is recorded.

The security light is capable of capturing both stills and video clips, and is a vital piece of surveillance equipment for any modern home.

It seems as though every time we switch on the news or open our daily newspaper, we are presented with another serious and public breach of the Data Protection Act.

Now it’s the turn of Southampton University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to admit their short comings, after the patient records of an alarming 33,000 individuals were stolen.

The records were kept on an unencrypted laptop which was stolen, with furious patients and Information Commissioner’s Office staff demanding to know just how something of this magnitude was allowed to happen.
Sally Anne Poole, from the Information Commissioner’s Office, questioned:

“Storing large volumes of personal information on portable devices is unnecessarily risky.
“Why were so many records downloaded onto an unencrypted laptop in the first place? It is vital that NHS organisations ensure their staff handle personal information securely.”

Unbelievably, encryption software is freely available to all NHS trusts, making this incident entirely preventable.

A spokesperson for the Southampton University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commented:

“The trust has recently completed a programme to encrypt its portable computers, but at the time of the incident, due to some special circumstances related to the way this laptop is used, it was one of a small number not yet fully protected.
“We have introduced a number of measures to improve security and encryption and want to reassure our patients that we are doing everything in our power to minimise the risk of an incident of this type occurring in the future.”

The incident highlights just how easy it can be for criminals to get their hands on sensitive data if proper preventative measures aren’t taken.

Maximum productivity leads to maximum profits, so you need to ensure that you do everything possible to achieve this.

However, there are many things that can get in the way of this, and one of the biggest distractions to employees today is social networking sites. The massive popularity of sites such as Facebook and Twitter has meant that it’s all too tempting for employees to have a quick peek and their account to catch up with friends. This is perfectly fine with most employers if this is done in allocated break times, although when work is affected it’s time to nip it in the bud.

There is some fantastic computer surveillance equipment available on the market today that makes easy work of seeing each and every site that your employees visit.

eBlaster 2010 PC monitoring software is an award winning package that has a range of useful functions including showing any websites visited, pc programs used, search engine queries and file sharing activities.

eBlaster pc surveillance equipment is the perfect way of ensuring that employees follow the correct in-house pc and internet usage procedures and resist the temptation to slack off.

With kerb crawling a huge problem in the city, a plan to deploy helicopters with night vision cameras that can read number plates, is being carefully considered.

The advanced surveillance equipment can even take shots of the driver and is silent- so suspicions won’t be aroused. Any images obtained could lead to the arrest of those involved- with police officials believing that the prospect of being arrested at home in broad daylight could prevent potential kerb crawlers from venturing out at all.

Metropolitan Police’s Detective Superintendant Richard Martin explained:

“We want to make the best use of resources. In operations involving decoy women officers we tend to use up our resources in arrests very quickly. Using a helicopter could mean we need not stop the operation but continue for longer.”
He continued: “Kerb-crawling is a blight on communities. It is a menace if you live near it. Innocent women walking home at night are approached in the street, while there are problems with working women using front gardens and back yards.”

The move is being welcomed by many anti-kerb crawling campaigners, who believe the surveillance helicopters could be a much needed breakthrough.

Even the most trusting amongst us have been there- suspecting that our other half may be up to no good. There are a number of factors that may arouse our suspicions, and if you suspect that your partner is doing the dirty then now is the time to take action.

Here are a few common things to look out for that may indicate that your partner is being less than faithful.

Working late

Although it’s true that increasing numbers of people are having to work late due to the tough economic climate, working until midnight then strolling in smelling of perfume/ aftershave is a dead giveaway that the only overtime they have been doing is with someone else.

Secret phone calls/ texts

If your partner is constantly taking phone calls in secret and being overly cagey about text messages, this is a sure sign that all isn’t well.

Excessive internet use

If your partner has started to sit at the computer until the early hours of the morning, it might not be work that they’re trying to catch up with.
However, you can easily get to the bottom of any suspicions by using a range of fantastic spy equipment that is available on the market today.

Read deleted texts with the amazing Deleted Text Message Reader, or use advanced PC Monitoring Software to trace exactly where they’ve been or what they’ve typed online.

The new penalties will come in to play on the 6th April, and aims to act as a deterrent to those who fail to effectively protect any sensitive information that they hold.

The size of the fine imposed will be determined on a case by case basis, although will be largely be affected by the extent and factors that to the data loss.

The severity of the fine aims to send a clear message to organisations that they need to review and tighten their data protection, or face the truly crippling consequences.

The government’s Information Commissioner, Christopher Graham, welcomed the new penalty systems and warned:

“When things go wrong, a security breach can cause real harm and great distress to thousands of people. I remain committed to working with voluntary, public and private bodies to help them stick to the rules and comply with the Act. But I will not hesitate to use these tough new sanctions for the most serious cases where organisations disregard the law.”

The new proposals have been met with praise by many, and as spy and surveillance equipment becomes more and more advanced, the implications of data loss become increasingly frightening.

This time, it’s the turn of Staffordshire Police, who have been accused of misusing anti-terrorism laws to spy on potential criminals.

According to reports, Staffordshire Police used surveillance equipment to spy on those who were suspected of a range of crimes- ranging from gun crimes to burglaries. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act is believed to have been used numerous times- although Staffordshire Police allegedly won’t reveal exact figures.

However, Staffordshire Police’s Detective Superintendent Martin Evans, stressed:

“Directed surveillance is one of the tactics available when we proactively target individuals of organised crime groups who we believe are actively committing crime.
“The surveillance can range from planned monitoring of a CCTV camera to look for and follow someone to covertly following people around. Authority will only be given by a senior officer of Superintendent rank or above once they are satisfied that the proposed activities are proportionate and necessary.”

RIPA is primarily aimed at capturing those suspected of serious crimes, although it was also revealed that individuals who committed minor public order offences were put under surveillance- which will lead to many people wondering just how well monitored the Act is.

Lancashire County Council have found themselves facing mounting criticism over their use of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA).

A local newspaper conducted a little investigation of their own when they requested to see how much the council had used the powers since 2004- with some surprising results. It was shown that the council had used RIPA powers to monitor cleaners who didn’t show up for work, a council employed carer who apparently claimed excessive travel costs and people pursuing false injury claims.

Surveillance equipment was also used to snare vandals we defaced a bus shelter.

Defending the use of the act, Lancashire County Council’s Chief Trading Standards Officer, Jim Potts explained:

“We use surveillance only when absolutely necessary to prevent crime.

“For example, we have used them to gather evidence on doorstop salesmen who use intimidating sales techniques, and people who sell counterfeit goods.

“We certainly do not routinely monitor employees in this way or use technology such as covert cameras.

“We have simply recorded that a member of staff has seen another member of staff do something at work, in the way that managers can and do every day.”

In addition to the use of surveillance equipment, RIPA also allows the council to tap and monitor phone calls- which may leave many locals wondering whether there really is such as thing as privacy anymore.

Let’s admit it- we’re all guilty of hiding report cards and detention slips from our parents when we were younger (and getting away with it if we were lucky!) However, for some pupils in Bristol, there is now nowhere to hide, thanks to the introduction of a new surveillance system that details their school performance.

The innovative Serco/CMIS system was recently tested by the parents of pupils at the city’s Brislington Enterprise College. The system allows parents to access their children’s attendance record, grades, behaviour and daily timetables.

Father of two Jonathon Phillips, trialled the system and confirmed:

“The information is presented in a variety of ways and is easy to follow.

“It helps both ways. If the children are doing well, it’s good to hear about it at the time so you can give them positive feedback. If there are issues that need to be sorted out, you can respond quickly.”

The college’s principle, John Matthews agreed:

“Already the response has been very encouraging and it is clear our parents and carers wish to take a more active role in their child’s education.

“Now that they can view the data for themselves, we are seeing much more pro-activity with regards to queries or concerns.”

The system is due to be installed in all secondary schools in the area this September.

With the Winter Olympics coming up, many top British athletes will be getting ready to make their way over to Vancouver in Canada in order to bag themselves a gold medal.

However, the Olympics are currently at the centre of a CCTV row- with many of Vancouver’s residents up in arms about the use of the surveillance equipment. It is estimated that around 900 cameras will be installed around areas that competition are due to take place.

The 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are due to begin on the 12th of February and end at the end of March, although the cameras are due to be activated on the 1st February.

The argument over when the CCTV cameras will be turned off threatens to put a dampener on the games though, with many locals furious that city officials will not confirm when or if the cameras will be removed.

Vancouver’s Mayor Gregor Robertson said:

“We need to approach it very cautiously. There’s a reason to [use them] for the Games specifically but after that there needs to be a lot more dialogue. People have to understand what the pros and cons are before we move forward on that.”

Local student Carmen Hung agreed:

“Why, instead of hiring maybe more security personnel walking around the street do they have cameras?”

Only time will tell whether the end of the Olympics will also see the end of the surveillance cameras, although one thing is for sure- locals will not be impressed with any more excuses.

A carer who was caught stealing from a severely disabled client pleaded guilty to four counts of theft and four counts of attempted theft at Bristol Crown Court recently.

Lorrain Andrews, who can only get around by wheelchair and requires help to get out of bed, first became suspicious when she realised that money was regularly disappearing from her purse.

Desperate to get to the bottom of the situation, Lorrain contacted local police and had CCTV surveillance equipment installed in her home- which clearly showed Hoy delving into her purse and rucksack. The CCTV footage showed that Hoy had stolen from her 8 times over a period of just a fortnight, and it was calculated that Hoy could have stolen a whopping £2,000 over the course of a year.

When arrested, Hoy initially denied the charges- although she soon backtracked after she was shown the camera footage.

Angry Lorrain said:

“At first I didn’t want to believe it. It was awful to come to the realization that someone in such a position of high trust should betray that trust and steal from me, a disabled, vulnerable woman dependent on others to meet my most basic needs.

“I was reduced to tears, hurt, upset and amazed…”

Hoy is due to be sentenced later this month.

Tracking devices can be incredibly useful pieces of surveillance equipment, especially when you are dealing with expensive commodities.

If you feel that the security of your car, for instance, is constantly playing on your mind, then investing in a tracking device can significantly reduce your stress levels and help you find a little peace.

Some of the devices available are very small and discreet, with many featuring magnets to keep them in place. They can easily be attached to the underside of a car and simply switched on. The device will start working straight away and it does not require an extensive setup.

Once the device has been deployed it will emit a signal every 15 seconds to update information on its position. This means that should you vehicle get stolen, police will be able to track it down to within 15 seconds of its last reported signal, which is a short enough window to be considered real time tracking.

This could help you to retrieve your stolen car very quickly, perhaps quick enough to prevent it changing hands or to prevent any damage being caused to it. The unit’s batteries will last for a minimum of two weeks.
