Firstly, lets cover the legality issues surrounding vehicle tracking and this also applies to any other spy related product. Like all surveillance and spy gadgets, vehicle tracking is absolutely fine to use if applied correctly. In fact, few could dispute it is one of the most powerful applications on the planet however there is a grey line which can easily be crossed just like any other surveillance application which then becomes an illegal practice for example, as in such a manner to spy on a persons whereabouts without their consent. Likewise, you are duty bound to inform a person/s should you have the ability to track their whereabouts even if that person is using a vehicle that belongs to YOU.

A very commonly heard sentence we hear is ‘I want to spy on my wife’ or ‘I think my partners cheating on me’. As a former PI with over 5 years experience in active field operations, and even with those limited experienced years I can guarantee 95% of the time this statement is correct. The majority of customers at this stage have made a conscious decision of finding the truth. Intuition is a very powerful process of a human being, whenever the mind has doubts it subconsciously stores to the left side of the brain (the side in which we do not use for everyday tasks) those changes of effect until a trigger is made and the conscious side (the right side of the brain) will then take over with an overwhelming desire to find the truth and peace of mind.

Vehicle trackers nowadays are in a completely different league to a few years back. The technology advancement is amazing. I remember seeing a breeze block sized tracker that literally had to be shaked to wake up and it died a death on performance. I remember it could only ping its location if it was actually on the dashboard so it could see the sky and updating its position was very slow meaning the location it gave could be miles away from its real location. I cant for the life of me think the point of it. Needless to say, this tracker is still available today hence slightly smaller now (it only looks the size of a house brick) but I presume it must use a decent GPS chipset like a SirfStarIII.

You may notice that we only sell one type of tracker on our website. The Covert GPS PeliTrak. This isn’t because we cant find trackers to advertise, on the contrary, there are too many available all stating wonderful features and performance but not all of them are worth the advertising they portray. As it happens a close friend of mine who shall remain anonymous is a leading tracking expert with over 15 years experience in this field and has evaluated every type of tracking system on the market. You will notice we write a lot about voice recorders mainly because the proprietor just loves getting jiggy with them but also because voice recorders are such a versatile tool of multiple uses. Voice recorders are a very popular and cost effective method of recording covertly (discreetly) or overtly (purposely on display) offering outstanding audio quality, can be used on the spur of the moment but more importantly, they provide vital evidence in cases where proof of verbal abuse or verbal agreements are necessary.

A genuine example not too long back in which a friend of mine (Mr N.B) wanted proof that his friends wife was having an affair with a DJ from a nearby pub. Add another £100 or so onto that and you will find some amazing progressive and innovative features added including a true OLED display, smaller design, higher performance, password protected access, in-built time and date calendar, voice activation, scheduled recording and even special modifications for further enhanced audio quality that cannot be reached through standard manufacturing capabilities. For roughly £280.00 you can get hold of Solar Powered Voice Recorders or super small Miniature Voice Recorders. Some of the smallest voice recorders in the world are offered for this price and are even smaller than a 50p coin!

The more you pay for voice recorders the more advanced, unique and creative the design will be. I was informed just over 2 weeks ago I would be presented with something quite special to get my teeth into and surely enough 2 weeks and 3 days later I was asked to bring any Symbian handset with me that had in-built GPS. My trusty N95 8GB was the subject of what was to be something really amazing. At the OSS office I handed over my N95 and was promptly handed it back less than 5 minutes later. I was then asked to check the handset for anything unusual in appearance and if any settings had been changed - nothing unusual I could see!

I was then instructed to take a drive or walk for at least 30 minutes and during that time to make a few calls, check the screen display and look for anything out of the ordinary like the handset running slow on applications etc. OK, so obviously SOMETHING was on my beloved N95 and I guessed it was a tracking application with being sent on my way so here is an accurate description of how this went..

Setting off at 10:50am I made a short stay trip into Stockport Town Centre followed by a drive towards Manchester City Centre along the main A6 road at 11:14am. I took a call from OSS asking me to park on any road as they could see I was driving! I made a few detours around the back streets before parking up. ”So where am I then I asked eagerly”

‘Your parked on Macferren Street around number 16?” replied OSS. At this point I looked across the door numbers to see I was parked about 30 feet from the given location and with a blank expression I knew this product was going to be something special. Let me just clarify what is going on here. My handset is out of my possession for just 5 minutes then I go on a brief drive where I am asked to find anything unusual with my phone. I can hardly believe that I am accurately being tracked to street level and not have a clue about it!  With excitement I headed back to OSS where they were expecting me (seen as they could see I was in the carpark from their PC). Although I was gone just under an hour I was amazed to see the tracking console had actually pinged my location every 20 seconds on the Virtual Earth platform but better than that, every 20 seconds it gave a detailed location of the street name and door number!

On further examination and with frustration to try and find an answer on my phone I was not able. My N95 showed absolutely no indication I was being tracked. I could see no icons, no draining battery, no slow applications, in fact I had no idea I was being tracked so accurately. Next, the software was explained in greater detail how a simple software file transfer to the handset followed by one simple SMS command (which incidently is not acknowledged on my N95 or even logged) actived the in-built GPS receiver to ping my position back to the OSS tracking console. I have NEVER seen this kind of tracking and so covertly accurate it is frightning!

You will find there are 2 types of tracking applications available. The first is GSM based tracking which is much cheaper however the accuracy is not very good and can be at the very least many miles away from the handsets true location. Further to this, GSM based tracking is not covert and a 3rd party service provider is used which also randomly sends SMS messages to the handset to acknowledge that they are being tracked. The second type is GPS based tracking and this can be as accurate to 2 meters however I have never seen a GPS tracking application which is completely covert like this one. I would be very interested to know if any company has anything similar in terms of being covert, this software is COMPLETELY covert and I mean Ziltch, Zero, De nada presence.

As if the tracking software wasn’t good enough, the software can be remotely activated and deactivated without giving any indication on the handset or even logging that any SMS had been sent! The software is completely invisable and untraceable and words cannot put into context just how good this product really is. The possibilies are endless with this type of application and my first thought is aimed at concerned parents especially those who have children who stay out late and want peace of mind. I also expect children who go missing could be tracked quickly, and spouses who disappear amongst other thoughts.

The software exchanges protocols with a great tracking console with features that include an Auto Refresh button (you can actually see the balloons drop on the street name where the handset is located in Real Time), a time and date calender, a geo-fencing feature which puts an invisable ring around the handset and will alert you once the handset moves out of that invisable ring plus many more fantastic features. This package has it all - a brilliant tracking console with accompanied covert tracking software which is implimented with adavanced hidden background features to operate at optimum performance, this sure is one hell of a product.

I could write much much more about this product, it is a brilliant slice of technology far more advanced than any other tracking application available today. This product deservedly receives top marks in every way for ease of use, performance and stealth like features and operation.

Verdict:

1. The long 17hr recording time
2. The audio quality

A 17hr recording time is very good for any voice recorder and this Semi-Covert Voice Recording Pen does deliver a solid 17hrs recording time due to a decent in-built fully rechargeable lithium. It’s easy to be misguided by recording times as many advertisers state 36/64/128/260 recording times and this is a crazy assumption as even the best recorders in the world do not have a battery performance to carry this through without compromising on audio quality however, not only can this Semi-Covert Pen Voice Recorder perform to 17hrs but the audio quality is absolutely fantasic. This device is easily on par with the audio of the Covert Watch Voice Recorder.

This Semi-Covert Pen Voice Recorder was tested out for useabilty and a bold step was taken to wave this in the face of innocence without causing the party to ask what the 4 buttons were! Unfortunately, whilst the Semi-Covert Pen Voice Recorder is a black colour and doesnt have any markings, it does let the side down with 4 buttons on display and this device simply isnt good enough to pass a visual examination. My recommendation is to use this device as a pure recording facility only suitable for the jacket pocket or leaving out of sight. The microphone is good enough to leave the Semi-Covert Pen Voice Recorder in an environment where an audio pick-up of 20ft is very acceptable.

The pen cleverly unscrews in the middle (the bottom half is the shortened ink cartridge) and the top half is the integrated flash chipset which allows you to connect the device directly to your computer and is absolutely visually impossible to know this secret compartment. Simply connect into the USB slot of your computer and it will be immediately recognised (Windows XP) as a mass storage device. The options to playback the audio files are now available. To back up the claim this device works on Windows Vista PC’s is also true however you do need to go to START MENU/MY COMPUTER, and then double click the REMOVEABLE MASS STORAGE DEVICE to get the same effect. Once a voice recording had been made, an automatic folder named ‘Voice’ is visible and inside this folder are your saved audio files.

This Semi-Covert Pen Voice Recorder is available in a 2GB version to offer maximum storage capacity. Charging is as easy as plugging it into your computer where it automatically recharges the internal lithium battery and the mechanical operation of this device is just as described - ‘Plug and Play’. There are no drivers or software to install and no cables either which is refreshing. Playing back the audio files is done either directly though your computers media player such as Windows Media, RealPlayer or QuickPlayer, or whatever audio software integration you may have installed on your computer OR you can use the supplied earphones which connect just the same as the data cable. Using these earphones is not just for it’s audio playback, you can store MP3 songs and listen back through the earphones too! I found the quality of songs extremely good clarity and no different to purchasing an MP3 player to do the same job.

Summary: This Semi-Covert Pen Voice Recorder doesnt shine as a covert device disguised as a pen but it does receive the highest marks for audio quality. If you have the option to hide this device or use in a top shirt pocket then it is a recording dream and playback (even at far distances) is very very impressive.

Verdict:

I have seen a few different types of watch voice recorders but I really like this model, it looks a quality item, feels weighty and solid, and timekeeping is very accurate but above all the important questions must be - does it give a good performance and can the word ‘covert’ be applied to this model? The word ‘covert’ MUST mean exactly that, which sadly is not the case in 99% of most watch voice recorders I have seen before however, this model does have the approval of a covert design given that there are no visual markings to show this watch is anything other than a normal elegant mens wrist watch.

If I must pick holes, the data cable jack socket could be designed a little more discreet but in practical testing I was never challenged or asked about the watch even when it was taken off and placed on the table in full view as I left the room. There are 2 small holes cleverly blended into the watches fascia and each hole gives you an illuminated indication to it’s recording status ie: green light = standby, red light = recording, but the lights can be turned off whenever you choose thus giving no indication of recording taking place. Another great feature is the recording can be paused and resumed discreetly should you need to leave the room for example and without breaking the actual audio file hence a smooth seamless transition when you come to playback.

To start/stop recordings was a simple click of the buttons and the audio file is automatically saved to it’s internal flash memory. OK, so the look, feel and confidence factors are ticked for approval but is the audio quality any good? Well, I can honestly say it is and with the heighened microphone, audio was clearly picked up some 15ft away and playback was incredibly clear. This is probably one of the most sensitive voice recorders out of the complete range and with a 17hr recording time from a single charge, this is also impressive.

To playback the audio files simply connect the device to your computer’s USB port using the supplied data cable and it will be immediately recognised (Windows XP) as a mass storage device. The options to playback the audio files are now available. To back up the claim this device works on Windows Vista PC’s is also true however you do need to go to START MENU/MY COMPUTER, and then double click the REMOVEABLE MASS STORAGE DEVICE to get the same effect.

Once a voice recording had been saved, an automatic folder named ‘Voice’ is visible and inside this folder are your saved audio files. There is really no need to rename this folder as the watches constructive design easily passes off inspection that it could actually be a storage device which is quite handy for hiding those important documents.

This Covert Watch Voice Recorder is available in the highest capacity 2GB version with a recording time of 17 hours before a recharge is needed and is pretty bang on (give or take a few minutes). Charging is as easy as plugging it into your computer where it automatically recharges the internal lithium battery. A green light glows to indicate charging and this goes out once fully charged. On my evaluation I found leaving the Covert Watch Voice Recorder in my PC for just a tad over an hour suitably boosted its internal battery to 100%. Please note, a lithium cell battery is required to power the actual watch’s timekeeping, and this can be done for a few ££’s at you local watch shop.

This is a good solid performer, easy of use and a clever design structure that is one of the better ‘covert’ models avalible. The mechanical operation of this device is just as described - ‘Plug and Play’. There are no drivers or software to install and only a single data cable to connect the device to your computer. Playing back the audio files is done either directly though your computers media player such as Windows Media, RealPlayer or QuickPlayer, or whatever audio software integration you may have installed on your computer.

Summary: This Covert Watch Voice Recorder gets top marks for overall performance, long recording times, ease of use, and superb audio pickup and playback quality. Excellent!

Verdict:

The Covert USB Stick Voice Recorder may be carried on a set of keys for example and activating the voice recording function via the slide switch is incredibly inconspicuous even at close quarters. Voice recordings were activated approx 3 seconds after sliding the switch forward and likewise, saved to it’s internal flash memory 3 seconds after the switch was slid back. To back up the claim this device works on Windows Vista PC’s is also true however you do need to go to START MENU/MY COMPUTER, and then double click the REMOVEABLE MASS STORAGE DEVICE to get the same effect. Once a voice recording had been made, an automatic folder named ‘Voice’ is visible and inside this folder are your saved audio files. You can simply rename the voice recorder folder in the event you are in the presence of company so there are no visible indications that the device is anything other than a completely normal USB Storage Device.

This Covert USB Stick Voice Recorder is available in 2 versions being 1GB and 2GB, and both versions state a recording time of 8 hours before a recharge is needed although I found this to be 12 minutes short at 7hrs 48mins. This is no big deal however, I could see no other benefits of purchasing the 2GB version unless you are intending using the device as a mass storage for data as well but for an extra £20 it’s not a bad price to pay. Charging is as easy as plugging it into your computer where it automatically recharges the internal lithium battery and I could find only 1 negative point being that it is so discreet there are no visible indications of it’s battery charge status. On my evaluation I found leaving the USB Stick Voice Recorder in my PC for 2hrs suitably boosted its internal battery to 100%.

The beauty of this product is the simplicity. The mechanical operation of this device is just as described - ‘Plug and Play’ and there are no wires, software or drivers to install at all. Playing back the audio files is done directly though your computers media player such as Windows Media, RealPlayer or QuickPlayer, or whatever audio software integration you may have installed on your computer. The audio quality is nothing less than outstanding! I was more than suitably impressed by the clear audio clarity and quality of the flash chip used in this device and yes it really did pick up conversations from approx 20 feet away. When tested outside the distance was considerably reduced, however it would be fair to say indoor/outdoor noise vibrations differ.

Summary: This Covert USB Stick Voice Recorder is a truely incredible and innocent looking device that delivers awesome powerful audio performance.

Verdict:

I am sitting here with 2 other ‘Covert’ Pen Voice Recorders supplied to me - 1 being identical in terms of looks however on close inspection it is obvious why this upgraded version is the prefered choice. Quite frankly, I am shelving the others to concentrate on this fine looking upgrade which LOOKS like a normal Barrel Pen and has a nice weighed feel of quality rather than the cheaper bulky plasticy types. The front gold section of the pen must be turned clockwise/anti-clockwise to rotate the writing nib into view and yes, it does actually write! By twisting the front gold section away, cleverly displays a shortened ink cartridge and also supplied in the packaging is a 2 further shortend ink cartridges for convenience. The only visible modification being a very discreet button with a tiny hole located towards the top half of pen and to be honest even the picture cannot pick it up. The hole is for you to see the pens current status ie: red light = recording mode, blue light = charging mode, green light = MP3 mode. When using the voice recording function, the light automatically turns off after 5 seconds which is good. Compared to the other 2 pen recorders this version far outstrips in terms of discreet looks.

This Covert Pen Voice Recorder was tested out for useabilty whilst in the presence of another person unrelated to our office and from standby to record took approx 7 seconds. I felt very comfortable using this device and deliberately displayed the button several times of which the person did not give a second glance. From a laymans point of view this could easily be passed off as the pen nib’s controller and I am comfortable in saying this Covert Pen Voice Recorder can be used in complete confidence whilst either on full display or popped in the top pocket. The inconspicuous control to start/stop recordings do not emit any sounds and only gave a brief flashing indication to let you know it’s status before commencing recording. Saving recordings was a simple click of the button followed by a flashing indication for 5 seconds to let you know the recording has been saved to it’s internal flash memory.

Now I want to playback the audio files so here’s the clever part. On my evaluation I found leaving the Covert Pen Voice Recorder in my PC for just a tad over an hour suitably boosted its internal battery to 100%.

The beauty of this product is the combined ease of use but it’s clever design structure. This feels and looks more of a pen than it’s closest competitors and the mechanical operation of this device is just as described - ‘Plug and Play’. There are no drivers or software to install and only a single data cable to connect the device to your computer. Playing back the audio files is done either directly though your computers media player such as Windows Media, RealPlayer or QuickPlayer, or whatever audio software integration you may have installed on your computer OR you can use the supplied earphones which connect just the same as the data cable. Using these earphones is not just for it’s audio playback, you can store MP3 songs and listen back through the earphones too! I found the quality of songs extremely good clarity and no different to purchasing an MP3 player to do the same job.

The audio quality is fantastic! I was more than suitably impressed by the clear audio clarity and quality of the flash chip used in this device and yes it really did pick up conversations from approx 20 feet away. When tested outside the distance was considerably reduced, however it would be fair to say indoor/outdoor noise vibrations differ.

Summary: This Covert Pen Voice Recorder receives top marks for overall performance, ease of use, and superb audio pickup and playback quality (even at far distances) this is very very impressive.
